First Baptist Church
About the Church ![]() First Baptist Church is a warm and welcoming group of ordinary people who believe in an extraordinary God. We gather each Sunday to celebrate the Risen Christ who forgives and transforms us. Our worship is a blend of contemporary and traditional styles, with an excellent choir, and preaching that is biblically grounded, grace based and relevant. First Baptist Church is a good blend of all ages and offers programs for children and adults and encourages all to deepen their relationships with God. Our building is located across the street from the Port Angeles Fire Department at 6th and Laurel. Built in 1939, our sanctuary is beautiful, traditional and simple. As an organization, the church was founded over 100 years ago. Strong in our American Baptist Identity (see American Baptist Beliefs), we are a people committed to mission and outreach in this community and around the world. The congregation of First Baptist has called Timothy Hughes to be our pastor. He graduated from Fuller Seminary in Pasadena, CA in June 2006. ![]() Timothy M. Hughes is a 2006 graduate of Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and is eager to work with us in serving God and proclaiming His kingdom in Port Angeles. Tim preaches Biblically based sermons. He helps people understand scripture and how to relate it to their personal lives. Tim, 31, was raised in Sunnyside, Washington. He and his wife Stacy have been married for four years. Stacy is an elementary teacher. Here is what Tim said about himself in his American Baptist profile: “I was born the middle of three children in a Christian home and was ‘raised in the church.’ My dad is an American Baptist preacher and my mom is a school teacher. My parents were (and are) involved in the lives of their children. Living in a parsonage meant that dad was always nearby’ and mom chose the life of a housewife until her kids started school. Mine was an ideal childhood and I am thankful for it. I’ve always felt God’s call in my life. I made my confession of faith when I was six and soon afterward I was baptized. As a young boy I would dream of working as a missionary. I pictured myself sailing in giant wooden ships, braving storms and angry crowds to proclaim God’s word—my boyhood image of mission was heavily influenced by stories of the Apostle Paul. As I matured I came to understand that mission is needed on the local level as well. I still remember that feeling of satisfaction when, being too old to attend vacation Bible school, I was asked to help with the program instead. Growing up in the church I have had the opportunity to serve in various ways. I have taught Sunday School, served on the church mission board, served as an usher, and even spent a couple of summers taking care of the church lawn. In high school, I joined Young Life. I loved it. As a student leader, I began to develop the skill to teach from scripture and to evangelize. My time in Young Life remains a high point in my Christian experience. I attended Seattle Pacific University and graduated with a degree in Religious Studies and a minor in Philosophy. After graduation I took a job as a pre-school teacher for developmentally delayed children. While attending college I became a member of Queen Anne Baptist Church. Pastor David Clark encouraged me to think seriously about attending seminary and gave me several opportunities to preach, which I eagerly accepted. Also, while living in Seattle, I met Stacy. Not long after I met her, God affirmed it was the time to pursue seminary, and I applied to Fuller. God also made it clear that Stacy was the woman for me. I proposed. On August 17, 2002, Stacy and I were married and in September we moved from Washington to Pasadena, California, and I became a seminarian. I have been an intern on staff at FBC of Pasadena. Among other responsibilities I oversaw the college ministry. I have also interned at Deep Healing Ministries, which is a Christian counseling center in Pasadena, and I am a reservist in the U.S. Air Force (2nd Lt.) and commissioned as a chaplain candidate.” Pastor Rev.
